DIRECTOR OF KHRC SPEAKS AT THE SCIENCE SUMMIT AT THE 77th UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY (UNGA77)

The Director of KHRC, Dr. Kwaku Poku Asante on Friday, September 30, 2022 made a presentation at the eighth edition of the Science Summit at a session convened by the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) at the 77th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA77).


The central theme of the conference was “the role and contribution of science to attaining the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The objective was to develop and launch science collaboration to demonstrate global science mechanisms and activities to support the attainment of the UN SDGs, Agenda 2030 and Local 2030. The event was a hybrid event with some sessions held in New York and others online.


Dr. Asante spoke on the study titled : “strengthening the evidence for policy on the RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine: assessment of safety and effectiveness using case-control studies embedded in the Malaria Vaccine Pilot Evaluation (MVPE-CC)”.


The session, titled “Funding research for impact: strengthening the role of science and evidenced-based policymaking” aimed to illustrate the value of global partnerships using EDCTP as a case study on advancing the production and usage of reliable research evidence in addressing unmet medical needs, especially amongst vulnerable populations in Africa.


The eighth edition of the UNGA77 Science Summit was organized by Intelligence in Science (ISC) around the 77th United Nations General Assembly (SSUNGA77) from September 13, 2022 to September, 30, 2022.


Dr. Asante is the Principal Investigator (PI) for the Ghana Malaria Vaccine Pilot Evaluation (MVPE) and Coordinating Investigator of the EDCTP funded Malaria Vaccine Pilot Evaluation Case-Control Studies in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi. Dr.Asante is also the PI for the Phase IV Malaria RTSS project in Ghana.
