Four Data Managers at the Kintampo Health Research Centre (KHRC) have been Certified as Data Protection Supervisors (CDPS) after successfully completing a Practitioner Level Course organized by the Data Protection Commission of Ghana and facilitated by the law firm WTS Nobisfields.
This five-day intensive training, held from December 16th to 20th, 2024, in Accra, sought to equip participants with the skills and knowledge required to uphold Ghana’s Data Protection Act in their roles as Data Protection Supervisors (CDPS). The data managers who have been certified as CDPS include Mr. Elisha Adeniji, a Senior IT Manager and the Deputy Head of the Data Science Department, Mr. Fredrick Bayor, a Senior Data Manger, Mr. Augustine Sarfo and Mr. Samuel Oppong Addo, both Data Managers.
During the training, participants were taken through the basics of the Data Protection Act 2012 (843), including its historical background, key concepts such as personal data and data controllers, and the rights of individuals regarding their personal information. The training also covered the responsibilities of the Data Protection Commission, and the legal entitlements of individuals, such as the right to access personal data, object to its use, amend or erase it, and seek compensation.
The training which was led by Mr. Seth Fosu Kwarteng, a certified data protection trainer, has strengthened the data managers’ skills to mitigate data breaches, ensure data security, and safeguard the integrity of research data. After the training, the data managers expressed confidence in their ability to handle sensitive data more effectively and to implement better data protection practices at KHRC.
This certification of KHRC’s data managers is a great step toward strengthening the Centre’s data security and maintaining the highest standards of data protection in compliance with the country’s laws. This proves the Centre’s commitment to ethical research practices and ensuring the sustainability of its data management systems.
