Wellcome Trust Climate Impact Study Launching and Stakeholders' Meeting

The Kintampo Health Research Centre of the Ghana Health Service Research and Development Division together with its partners including the Columbia University, Ichan School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, Montana State University, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and sister health research centres at Novrongo and Dodowa on Tuesday, May 7, 2024 launched at the AH Hotel in Accra a Wellcome Trust-funded climate change impact study titled "Building a Climate Cohort to Monitor the Health Impacts of Climate Change in Ghana."

The project aims to investigate the impact of climate change on morbidity and mortality, leveraging the robust Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) in Kintampo, Dodowa, and Navrongo Health Research Centres. Furthermore, the study will also examine the impact of climate change on birth and child health outcomes through well characterized pregnancy cohort studies.

Additionally, the project will examine public engagement in making climate change matter in the management of health risks. Stakeholders at the launch used the opportunity to fine tune the research approach and created a platform for climate and health research to ensure work is not done in silos, but know and build on what each other is doing to engender synergy that will lead to climate change resilience in Ghana. Institutions represented at the launch were: the Research and Development Division of the Ghana Health Service, the World Bank, Clean Air Fund, University of Ghana, University of Energy and Natural Resources, International Growth Centre, Ghana Meteorological Agency, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Environment, Regional Institute for Population Studies, Centre for Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Services, and Environfin Consult.
