The Kintampo Health Research Centre (KHRC) has been collaborating with some district and municipal health directorates in the Brong Ahafo Region since its inception. To maintain and strengthen this collaboration, the KHRC has donated fifteen (15) different types of weighing scales to the Techiman Municipal Health Directorate (MHD) of the Ghana Health Service.
Speaking at a brief presentation ceremony which took place at the premises of the Municipal Health Directorate in Techiman on 4th May, 2012, the Director of KHRC, Dr. Seth Owusu-Agyei who led the delegation, said the donation was in response to a request from the MHD to support aspects of their work, and the management of KHRC had thought it appropriate to assist. He noted that the items donated were not going to solve completely the problems of the health directorate; but he was of the view that when put into good use, the equipment would assist in the care of children in the municipality. The Director of KHRC was accompanied by the Administrator-General Mr. Jacob Saah, and the Procurement Officer, Mr. Kenneth Gyasi.

On behalf of the Techiman Municipal Health Directorate, the Municipal director, Mr. Raphael Dagoe Dakurah expressed his sincere gratitude to KHRC for the kind donation. He stressed that the donation was going to help address the shortfalls of the Municipal Health Directorate in weighing children. Mr. Dakurah stated that the Government’s policy to roll out Community-based Health Planning Services (CHPS) could not be successfully carried out without medical equipment such as the ones donated. He said the Municipal Health Directorate has 14 Community Health Officers (CHOs) deployed in 14 CHPS compounds and the government had stressed the need for five more CHPS compounds to be rolled out this year. He added that each of these compounds will definitely need a weighing scale and the donation of the items would go a long way to support the CHPS compounds. Mr. Dakurah assured the director and staff of KHRC that “we are going to put these equipment into very good use and we shall ensure that we maintain them and service them at regular intervals to prolong the life span of the equipment”, and added that he was counting on the continuous support of KHRC and other organisations in the municipality.

Dr. Owusu-Agyei expressed the hope to support the remaining districts and municipalities in the region which the centre was collaborating with. He reminded the gathering that in spite of the support which KHRC had been giving to the districts, he could not recall any of the M/DHMTs mentioning that KHRC has supported in one way or the other when they are reporting at the annual regional review meetings. He appealed to M/DHMTs to ensure that the support given to them by KHRC is also mentioned in addition to the support given by international organisations. The delegation from KHRC took the opportunity to visit the centre’s field office in Techiman.
