KHRC hosts Principal Investigator of ABACUS study

The Kintampo Health Research Centre(KHRC) was privileged to host Professor Heiman Wertheim for a two-day working visit from 1st to 2nd February 2018.
As part of the visit Professor Wertheim toured the study area in a field trip. He also did a presentation to the KHRC Scientific staff with insights into Antibiotics Access, Use and Resistance which the ABACUS study seeks to address.
Professor Wertheim is one of the Principal Investigators (PI) on the ABACUS study which includes the Kintampo Health and Demographic Surveillance (KHDSS) site.
Professor Wertheim is a medical doctor, a Professor of Clinical Microbiology and Head of the Clinical Microbiology Department of the Radboud University Medical Center, Netherlands. He is also a former Director of the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The study which is being funded by Welcome Trust started in 2016 and is set to end in 2018. It seeks to compare community-based antibiotic access and consumption practices across communities in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) in Asia and Africa in order to inform the design of, and identify targets for community-based intervention strategies that may be used to promote rational antibiotic use.
INDEPTH Network of which KHRC is a member, Oxford University in the UK and Umea University, Sweden are the Collaborating institutions in this promising study.
